Since 2003 I have been responsible for supervising scientific research and and planning, coordinating and managing laboratory activities implemented at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie in the field of animal health and welfare, food and feed safety.

In addition I coordinate also activities focusing on the diagnosis, prevention, control and eradication of the major infectious diseases of animals and the implementation of laboratory controls along the whole production chain of foods of animal origin. During my career I have been head of the Epidemiology Unit at the IZSVe and I have coordinated the implementation of animal disease surveillance and monitoring programmes as well as of studies on risk factors for disease introduction and spread.

I have a wide experience in the management of contingency plans of OIE listed diseases (avian influenza, Newcastle disease, foot and mouth disease, classical swine fever, rabies etc.) also by the application of GIS tools. I am the contact point of the OIE collaborating centre for epidemiology, training and control of emerging avian diseases. As EU, OIE and FAO expert I participated in numerous missions abroad for the control of animal diseases epidemics.

Since 1982 I have been author or co-author of over 400 publications, predominantly on infectious diseases of livestock, including papers published in international refereed journals, papers and abstracts published in the proceedings of conferences, guest editorials and reviews.

I joined the Epicentre, Massey University, New Zealand, in 2017 with a background of production animal medicine and applied research.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from Massey University in 1986, and followed a clinical career with companion, then latterly, production animals in New Zealand and the UK. Then I gained a Masters of Veterinary Studies (Epidemiology) in 2006 from Massey University after studying part-time and working as a research project manager for a private contract research organisation within a clinical practice in New Zealand. In that role I designed and conducted observational studies and clinical trials, principally on commercial dairy farms, with both industry-good partners and for pharmaceutical companies.

I submitted my PhD Thesis in 2017 on the extent, causes and financial consequences of culling and mortality of New Zealand dairy cows. My main research interests are in using appropriate statistical methods, including spatial and survival analysis, to provide farmers and their advisors with improved tools to support decision-making that improve animal health and production.

I started working at Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe) in 2009, since then I have been involved in in the launch, development and implementation of research projects and multi donor financed service tenders in the veterinary, food safety and security sectors.

I graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine Parma (Italy) in 2008. I held a Master degree in International Veterinary Cooperation and a Diploma of specialization in Animal health, livestock breeding and production delivered by the University of Padova (Italy). Currently I am attending a Post graduate Diploma in Livestock Health and Production delivered by the University of London (United Kingdom).

I joined the OIE on September 2016 providing both technical and scientific assistance to OIE Member Countries willing to apply for, or maintain, an official status or the endorsement of a national official control programme. Since September 2017 I am part of the World Animal Health Information and Analysis Department providing technical support for collection, verification and dissemination of animal health information provided by Member and non-member countries.

China animal health epidemiology center (OIE Cooperation Center )

I graduated with a PhD of Veterinary Medicine from Northwest A&F University in 2004, I am the Deputy Director of China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center (CAHEC), and Director of Animal Health Risk Assessment Laboratory, MOA.

I have been appointed as the Expert of the National Animal Health Risk Assessment Committee and the Deputy Director of the Office by the Ministry of Agriculture. I have been working on animal disease research and control for more than 30 years. I have taken charge of a great variety of research programs funded by international, national and local organization on zoning and compartmentalization for animal disease control,establishment of specified animal disease free zone. Meanwhile I formulated hundreds of regulations and standards concerning establishment of animal disease regional management and specified animal disease free zone/ compartment.

I have participated in numerous animal disease risk assessments for Avian Flu, PPR ,FMD and BSE, among other diseases, and also conducted in-depth researches and have rich experiences on animal health assessment and zoning and compartmentalization for animal disease

Veterinary Epidemiologist at OIE World Organisation for Animal Health

I graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 2000 at the University of Turin, then I worked for Turin University since 2001 at the Department of Veterinary Sciences. Since 2012 I held the position of fixed term researcher in the Department of parasitic disease of the same University.

I held a PhD in Animal Production in 2007, focused on the ecology and diseases of lagomorphs. Since 2010 I worked in different EU funded projects for the control of diseases in wildlife. My activity in the last years was specially focused on the use of GIS in veterinary epidemiology.

I joined the OIE on March 2015 and I’m currently working as Veterinary Epidemiologist in the World Animal Health Information and Analysis Department.

Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine, Beijing, China (CAIQ)

I graduated from Yunnan Agricultural University with a bachelor degree in Science of Animal Husbandry in2009, then I joined the Institute of animal quarantine in Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine(CAIQ).

During my working period, I got a master's degree in Preventive Veterinary Medicine from China Agriculture University. I have over 8 years of experience in risk analysis of import animal quarantine. I started to learn GIS in 2009 when Professor.

Nicola Ferrè from IZSVe came to Beijing to give us an elementary training in using GIS in animal quarantine. I am very interested in IT and consumer electronics , so after training I start to use GPS and desktop GIS application software in the management of imported animal quarantine farm. By using ArcGIS, Quantum GIS and other GIS software, I provide information to General Administration of Quality Supervision Inspection and Quarantine of China ( AQSIQ) to strengthen supervision and management of import and export animals and animal products.

With the great help of specialists in IZSVe, my team are developing an open source web GIS application to manage the live animals exported to Hongkong and Macao

GIS Office Coordinator

I have started to actively work with GIS in 1993 during the Italian foot-and-mouth disease epidemic. Since then, I have had the chance to experience the usage of GIS in different animal diseases and to learn many facets about GIS application in animal health. I have experienced different type software products, digital mapping, geospatial data and data models, location services and automated generalisation techniques. All this is based on my experience of over 20 years at the IZSVe and research activities at national and international level.

Thanks also to my education from Padua University (bachelor in Statistic in 1992, and degree in Political Science, with a specialization in Political Economy in 1996) and IUAV university of Venice (Master in GIS in 2002, and degree in GIS and Remote Sensing in 2013), I have acquired experience to bridge the gap between the technologist and the user, and to manage GIS programs.

I have competence in ISO TC/211 and OGC standards. I’m also directly involved in several research programmes, and in supervising graduate theses for University of Padua (Veterinary department) and IUAV University of Venice. Finally, I am author or coauthor of over 40 publications including peer-reviewed manuscripts, proceeding of conferences and abstracts.

DVM, MSc, PhD - Veterinary Epidemiologist

I am a veterinarian and I started working at IZSVe in 2004, during my PhD. Since then I have been involved in the management of Avian Influenza epidemics and data, including studies related to biosecurity at farm and territorial levels. I was also included in the team managing the oral rabies vaccination in foxes, during the 2008-2011 epidemic in north-eastern Italy, and I have contributed to the regional surveillance plan for West Nile Disease in Veneto region.

My main interests include (but are not limited to): epidemiology of infectious diseases in animals (with a particular focus on spatial analysis), mathematical modelling of disease spread, and ecology of vector borne diseases.

GIS Systems Analyst / Programmer

OIE Collaborating Centre for epidemiology, training and control of emerging avian diseases, Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie - GIS Unit, Italy.

I am a software developer and I approached the GIS in 2006, when I started working at the IZSVe on a project related to Avian Influenza. Over the time I was able to join my software development and database knowledge with GIS, to work on webGIS applications and geo-based systems (exploiting spatial features of different environments). In addition I worked with environmental data, applying remote sensing and GIS analyses on the raster data focused on Vector Bourne Diseases.

My main interests include (but are not limited to): Web-app development (with a particular focus on GIS apps), management of environmental data (for example: land surface temperature) acquired by satellite images to support ecological analysis.

Administrative collaborator - Cooperation Unit

I hold a Master’s Degree in Law, Institutions and Policies of European Integration from the University of Padua and have professional experience in the organisation of events such as fairs, workshop and trainings in multilingual and multicultural environments.

Since I joined the Cooperation Unit of Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie I coordinate international projects, both from the technical, logistics and administrative point of view, and I have been involved in the organisation and implementation of different EU funded programmes, such as BTSF and EuropeAid as well as OIE cooperation projects and FAO projects.
