Programme Aims
The overall aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge on GIS for veterinarians and technicians from local or central veterinary organisations, who require core training and skills in planning and developing GIS projects to support animal disease control activities. In particular, the course expected learning outcomes are the following:
- the participant will demonstrate proficiency in the use of geospatial softwares, including capture, editing and management of geographical disease event data;
- the participant will demonstrate proficiency in map creation and design, including thematic map display and cartographic design for decision support systems;
- the participant will be able to run geoprocessing tools and develop exploratory spatial data analysis;
- the participant will have the possibility to develop networking and exchange views with peers.
Methods of Instruction
This training course is tailored for veterinary specific purposes and veterinary cases and terminology will be used. Should specific GIS, information technology or spatial statistic topics be discussed, these will be made available also to non-specialists.
The method of instruction is based on the combination of theoretical lectures, practical tutorials and exercises developed by using the QGIS software(http://www.qgis.org).
Who Should Attend
This course is intended for:
- Veterinarians of either central and/or local veterinary health organisations, with little or no knowledge and experience on GIS. Technicians of the veterinary service who wish to implement GIS technology to support eradication and control of animal diseases activities (i.e., controlled area delineation and reporting, production of summary maps, identifying immediate neighbours and farms within a given distance).
- University researchers, technicians, statisticians who already work with epidemiological data and want to explore operational activities to capture, manage and analyse data for their own research, for local data analysis, or for blending geographical data with statistical analysis.
Course Language
The course will be held in English. No simultaneous translation is foreseen.
Costs
The training course is free of charge, coffee breaks and lunches are included for the days of the course. Training materials will be provided to all participants. The participants will have to provide for their own travel and subsistence costs.

Prerequisites
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Windows software are required
- It is expected that each participant will use his/her own laptop
- Latest version of QGIS software (http://www.qgis.org) should be already installed on participant's laptop before the course.
